Living in “The Wireless Era”, wireless phone charging is still a big hassle since they only work over small distances and the devices need to be aligned properly for optimal efficiency. For people suffering from “low battery anxiety”, Wi-Charge an Israeli company has come up with a technology which can deliver several watts of power to our phones and IoT devices through infrared beam within 10 metre range.
Wi-Charge offers freedom from power outlets and routing problems, so we can place our phone anywhere or even carry it along without being bothered about its battery life. According to Vaisleib (CEO), this new technology would completely charge a mobile phone within 2-3 hours.
Wi-Charge uses a “Distributed Laser Resonator” technology in which retro-reflectors are placed on both transmitter and the receiver to minimize the loss of energy and to ensure that 100% of the transmitted power reaches the devices.

The entire concept of charging at a distance revolves around four major steps –
- Transmitter placed on the ceiling searches for receivers in the room that require power
- Each receiver reflects a beam of particular pattern to help the transmitter analyze its power needs
- A narrow beam of IR light is sent to the device for charging purposes
- Transmission stops if the light beam is broken and resumes when the path is cleared
A single transmitter provides wide coverage upto 250 square feet and multiple transmitters can be combined to increase the coverage and power. Wi-Charge transmitters have delivery capacities ranging from 500- 2500 mW. Receivers contain a mini photo-voltaic cell which converts transmitted light into power, these receivers can be embedded into mobile devices or connected to an existing charging port.

Wi-Charge products are eco-friendly and classify as Class 1 laser products, they were approved by the FDA and also obtained compliance with International Safety Standards in the year 2017. However the only disadvantage seems to be the necessity of a direct line of sight from the transmitter to the receiver, to overcome this problem companies integrating Wi-Charge will embed a rechargeable battery or superconductor.
