The tree plantation movement for planting 20 million trees has been surpassed by raising more than $20 million. This campaign began around two months ago when hundreds of YouTubers starting with Jimmy “MrBeast” Donaldson collaborated to fight climate change with the help of the Abor Day Foundation.
MrBeast collaborated with some of the YouTube’s most famous creators which includes Mark Rober (9.7M subs), Marques Brownlee (10M subs), Smarter Every Day (7.4M subs), Ninja (22.4M subs) and many more. Many more channels joined later after the initial announcement of the campaign on 25th October. The whole event was a suggestion by MrBeast’s fans to celebrate 20 million subscribers by planting 20 million trees but soon got traction with the help of social media for passing the information and millions of YouTube views.
By October 31st, more than $10 million had already been raised, with help coming in from many famous personalities. Elon Musk donated $1 million, Tobi Lütke donated $1,000,001 (just to beat Elon Musk), and Jack Dorsey donated $150,000 and $200,000. YouTube CEO also joined in with $200,000.
The foundation plants one tree for $1 donated to them. This is supposedly one of the fastest-growing environment fundraising initiatives, the trees planted will absorb 1.6 million tons of carbon and help remove 115,000 tons of chemical air pollution. Trees will be planted by December 2020.
