Toshiba Now Quits laptop market after 35 years

From the years of competition, Toshiba has announced to quit the laptop business by selling its 19.9% of stakes to Sharp.

In 2018 Sharp has bought 80% of the shares of Toshiba’s personal computing arm for $36m and now Sharp had bought the remaining stakes of Toshiba’s in June.

As a result of this transfer, Dynabook has become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sharp

Toshiba said in a statement.

Toshiba is a Japanese firm headquartered in Tokyo founded in 1939. Toshiba has a diversified range of products including power, industrial and social infrastructure systems, electronic components, elevators and escalators, logistics, semiconductors, printers, hard disk drives, batteries, lighting, as well as IT solutions such as quantum cryptography.

In 2010 Toshiba had been one of the top 10 in the chip industry.

Why Toshiba is leaving Laptop Business?

Toshiba’s first laptop was launched in 1985 and after years, the competition in the laptop market has become so much difficult that in 2015 the firm posted a full-year loss of $318m.

Toshiba’s first laptop was T1100 packed an Intel 80C88 CPU that has 256KB of RAM and supports 3.5″ and 5.2″ floppy drives for storage. This PC ran on MS-DOS and has a 640 x 200 display and was priced at $1,899.

In 2011 Toshiba had sold 17.7 million of PCs but the peak was dropped to 1.4 million of sales in 2017.

If we see the reports analysis competition in the laptop market has become very tough and after such a pandemic situation only a few brands were able to survive in the market such as Apple, Lenovo, ASUS, etc.
