After getting clearance of making internet connection as a basic human right as per the March 2017 budgetary promise. Kerala is all set to provide a free high-speed internet connection to more than 20 Lakh BPL families.
The Fibre Optic Network project is passed on Wednesday in the Kerala Cabinet with the allotment of INR 1,548 Crores.
Internet connection made a basic a citizen right. Kerala cabinet gives final nod for ₹1548 crores Kerala Fibre Optic Network (KFON)Project to provide Internet to every household in the state. For 20 lakh BPL households it will be free. The project to be completed by Dec 2020.

The project will be set-up by Kerala State IT Infrastructure Limited and Kerala State Electricity Board Limited. The tender of the project is hunted by Bharat Electronics Limited. Kerala High Court gives a verdict in September 2019 making the right to access the Internet is part of the fundamental right under Article 21 of the Constitution.
The State government is expecting a giant leap in the IT sector including artificial intelligence, blockchain, and startup domains.
