Kali Linux 2020.1 has been released officially with some new tools, support for non-root users by default, Kali Single Installer Image and new updated theme to know more about non-root user support visit.
In the last update, Kali has made some major changes by introducing default for non-rooted users and changing theme design by switching from GNOME to Xfce which looks more stylish.
Kali in live mode will be running as user kali password kali. No more root/toor.
- root/toor is dead. Long live kali/kali.
Kali Single Installer Image
Team Kali Linux has decided to completely restructure and simplify the images they release. Now we will have an installer image, a live image, and a network installer image. These changes were made to make an easier selection of the right image to download.
While installation this version allows users to select the desktop environment to install for each DE: XFCE, GNOME, KDE, etc. The default image contains the kali-desktop-Xfce and kali-tools-default packages, allowing for an offline installation of Kali. Kali live install is not included in this image. If you wish to use live mode, you’ll need the live image.
NetHunter Images
Kali’s mobile pen-testing platform has been updated with some improvements. One of the major improvements is that you are no longer required to root your phone to run Kali NetHunter.
Kali Nethunter comes with three editions:
- NetHunter – Needs rooted devices with custom recovery and patched kernel with no restrictions.
- NetHunter Light – Needs rooted devices with custom recovery but no custom kernel with some minor restrictions
- NetHunter Rootless – Installable on all stock standard, unmodified devices using Termux. Some limitations, like lack of dB support in Metasploit and no root permissions.
Theme, Tools, and Kali Under Cover
In the last update, Kali has made changes theme by switching from Gnome to Xfce Xfce. Now, Gnome comes with a light and dark theme.
Some new tools have been introduced in this edition such as cloud-enum, email harvester, phpggc, sherlock, splinter and some improvements were done in existing tools.
End of Python2
As from 1st January 2020, python2 has reached to the end of life so keeping in mind Kali team is removing tools depended on python2
Some small changes
- Adding new icons to tools and refreshing it.
- Icons used on the menu have been replaced.
- Change in graphical install.
- new kali-community-wallpapers and old kali-legacy-wallpapers.
