Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi– three of China’s largest smartphone makers – have inked a deal to jointly create a transmission alliance. It will facilitate file transmission between phones from any of the aforementioned brands. From a user’s perspective, this alliance means they can transfer files seamlessly between Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo phones. File transfer is a higher speed without requiring any third-party application. The one-step file transfer feature will be available on phones running MIUI, ColorOS, and FuntoucOS. The announcement said other brands are welcome to join the program, but in my opinion, it is unlikely Huawei, which is trying to build its own ecosystem and has always distanced itself from being seen as a competitor to other Chinese brands (instead, it sees itself as a rival to Apple and Samsung on a global scale) will take part. In fact, I think these three brands are teaming up mostly with Huawei in mind more than Apple.
File Transfer
Initially, the file transfer service would be available between Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo. However, the company has announced that the alliance is open for other manufacturers willing to partner for the peer-to-peer file sharing service. It is likely that Redmi and Realme too would be a part of this alliance as they are Xiaomi and Oppo sub-brands, respectively.
The mutual file transfer alliance will create a channel. The channel will support multiple file formats. It will provide a high-speed file transfer and sharing experience without any stability or signal traffic issues. While Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo are the founding members of the aforementioned alliance, more companies have been invited to join the group. They will provide smartphone users with a more convenient file transfer and sharing experience.
The Rivalry
While Xiaomi and Oppo have successfully expanded into Europe over the past year, their main battleground is still in Asia. It is particularly the still-developing India market, in which Xiaomi is king but Oppo and sub-brand Realme are making headway fast.
According to the company, the exchange of files wouldn’t use a lot of battery. It would not use 4G data or a third-party app – it is based on Bluetooth. Speeds would reach up to 20 MB/s, so a standard 720p movie would be transferred between phones in under two minutes.
It is Huawei, after all, which has recently launched its own operating system and ecosystem in China. The Shenzhen tech giant has also ridden a wave of patriotic sentiments in recent months. It is only to increase its market share in China at the cost of other brands over the last quarter.
Currently, the Inter-Transfer Alliance (the name is just a rough translation) has only three members. Here Xiaomi is welcoming others to join. It is a safe bet that brands like Realme and Redmi will also be a part of the team.
