The term ‘tooter’ refers to a person who toots or plays a pipe or horn. Tooter is exactly like Twitter. Twitter clone Tooter is the micro-blogging platform that was launched in July 2020 and is a cross-over of Facebook and Twitter.
Tooter itself believes that India should have a Swadeshi Social Network.
The About Page of Tooter claims, “Without one we are just a digital colony of the American Twitter India company, no different than what we were under the British East India company. Tooter is our Swadeshi Andolan 2.0. Join us in this Andolan. Join us!”.
All the Tooter handles of all the prominent persons and politicians have verified accounts. Tooter is not much different from Twitter, just like users tweet on Twitter, users can post ‘toots’ in tooter.
Tooter appears to have some prominent users like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home minister Amit Shah, the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) handle and defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
Interestingly, the user interface (UI) of Swadeshi Tooter looks like a clone of Twitter. Tooter has a blue ‘couch shell’, which is the only thing that is different from Twitter. However, it doesn’t look like they are tooting on Tooter, and the tweets are an exact copy of their Twitter profiles and activity. In fact, when one user checks the source code, it would appear that Tooter is scraping the data of prominent Indians from Twitter.
There is also a pro version of Tooter, one can upgrade to Tooter Pro by just paying Rs. 1000 per year. However, the site does not mention where to make this payment.
