Kashmiris Faces WhatsApp Accounts Deactivation.

The internet has been down in Kashmir for over four months as according to the dispute over Kashmir’s autonomy. On Wednesday many users reported on social media that WhatsApp users were leaving group chats.

Some thought it would be some sort of glitch or technical issue, but concerning Facebook’s inactivity policy which states that if users don’t log back into their accounts for over 120 days, their account is deactivated.

In the support section of WhatsApp that the deactivated users have 30 days to access their data before it is completely wiped out. Those users who have not backed up their data on WhatsApp’s server will lose it as soon as their respective accounts are deactivated.


WhatsApp has become a necessity in today’s techy world. It has around 340 million users in the Indian subcontinent. Around 1 million smartphone users of India live in Kashmir. On Twitter and other social media people expressed their sadness as first some thought that it was the Indian government’s doing.

Confirmation from Facebook tells that this policy will still affect the users of Kashmir who are unable to access the internet.
