WeTransfer, a popular file transferring site, is banned in India by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). However, the main cause to issue such a ban on the website is not clear yet.
A report by Mumbai Mirror reveals that DoT asked all the ISP across the nation to ban three URLs. Out of the three, the first two regards to banning two specific URLs on the website. The third notice ordered to ban the entire website.

WeTransfer is a Dutch internet-based file-sharing website on the web. The core service is free as users can send files of up to 2 GB. The paid feature for WeTransfer – ‘WeTransfer Pro’ allows users to send up to 20 GB at a time and offers features like password protection, profile page customization, and 1 TB (1000 billion bytes) storage. The site has millions of users worldwide. However, in this lockdown period site had gained higher popularity in our country.
WeTransfer Banned ? (Expected Reason)
In WeTransfer, when users send files to each other, the site is just a carrier and has no access to the content of the files. As a result, the site can be used to send pornographic contents, or any other data encouraging threat to national security.
“Delhi Police had requested the IT ministry to block two download links and the entire We Transfer website immediately. Following which orders were issued to the website and links suggested by the Delhi Police,”
