Xiaomi Patents Waterfall Display for Smartphone

Xiaomi has filed an interesting smartphone design patent with a waterfall display back in September 2019 with the Chinese Patent Office, CNIPA. The patent was published on April 3, 2020, and has now been included in the Global Design Database of the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO).

According to the patent document cited on LetsGoDigital, Xiaomi will use the rounded display on the two edges (at an angle of 90˚), which is known as a waterfall display. Here due to the waterfall display design, both of the edges are more than 60% of the screen. Also, here the primary display is having a sleek design which means ultra-slim bezels with an earpiece on the top.

The two edges of the phone seem to hold the control interface. The home screen shows the general status icons i.e., the battery indicator and network strength. While operating any app the basic navigation controls can be controlled from the side. This new design shows a new way for productive usage of waterfall displays on smartphones.

The patent key focuses on the UI that means the top and bottom edge and the rear panel of the phone are not patented. Through the design, we cannot assume that what type of front camera will be used in this by the company.

According to some other reports, the company will not use the in-display camera otherwise that would be visible in the UI. That strongly indicates that the company might use the under-screen camera, which cited earlier in 2019 through a prototype.

Just like other patents, we cannot confirm whether Xiaomi will set it for commercial use or not. Well, that is it for this one. Let us know what you think of this one in the comment section down below and stay tuned for future updates.
