BlackBerry Messenger, the secure messaging service that implemented many mobile chat delights– and was blamed for the London 2011 uprisings– eventually shut down on Friday. The service-owning Indonesian company stated its plans in April, allowing users to migrate for a month.
We are proud of what we have built to date. The technology industry, however, is very fluid, and in spite of our substantial efforts, users have moved on to other platforms, while new users proved difficult to sign on.

The shutdown applies only to the Android and iOS BBM app. The BBM service will continue to function as usual on older BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry OS systems. Photos, videos and other files communicated by BlackBerry Messenger can only be downloaded while the app is running, so rush if you still need to save files. The data will no longer be retrievable after it shuts down on May 31.
By relying on physical keyboards and minimal-cost devices, BlackBerry at first faced growing competition from Apple’s iPhone and other Google-powered Android os smartphones. Less than five years after the official release of the iPhone, however, in the summer of 2013 BlackBerry gave up on the unavoidable, releasing BBM for iOS and Android. BlackBerry has left the telephone industry in 2016.
If that’s too much to think about transferring to another messaging app, take another look at BBMe, BBM’s business version. It offers the very same functionality that you love about BBM— end-to-end encryption and secure communication — and is available for Android, iOS, Windows, and MacOS. It’s also going to deal with BB10 and BBOS.
In the first year, BBMe is free and requires a $ 2.49 six-month subscription. It offers 1-on-1 chats, group messages, expiring images and messages, file and note sharing, and a simple, easy-to-use interface to read alerts.
